Vegan Matcha Tiramisu

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

Vegan Matcha Tiramisu is a twist on the classic Italian dessert with its fresh and bright Japanese matcha flavor. It's rich, creamy and full of flavors from the vegan whipping cream and matcha-infused cookies.

This easy recipe can be prepared in just 30 minutes, with no oven required.

A dish of matcha tiramisu

While I loved the classic coffee kick of my last Vegan Tiramisu, some days call for a different kind of pick-me-up. That's when I discovered matcha as a prominent alternative for caffeinated source.

This vibrant green tea powder adds a new dimension to the dessert by creating a unique flavor – some fresh notes combined with an earthy depth. Matcha is often associated with peace and mindfulness, as it is used in Japanese tea ceremonies. When enjoying this dessert, it can feel like you are walking through a 'zen' Japanese garden, far from the hustle and bustle.

If you’re longing for a traditional flavor, be sure to explore my Vegan Tiramisu recipe!

Ingredients

To make this recipe, you'll need:

An overhead shot of ingredients used in the Matcha Tiramisu

Ladyfingers:

  • Biscoff Cookies: These are a flavorful alternative to traditional ladyfingers. Their caramelized taste will add a unique twist to the tiramisu.
  • Matcha Tea (from Matcha Powder): Used to infuse the cookies with matcha flavor, giving them a distinctive green tea essence.

Whipping Cream:

  • Nature’s Charm Oat Whipping Cream: A vegan alternative to traditional whipping cream, made from oats. Refrigerating it overnight helps it whip better.
  • Powdered Sugar: Sweetens the cream while keeping it light and fluffy.
  • Matcha Powder: Adds the signature matcha flavor to the cream.

Garnish:

  • Matcha Powder: A light dusting on top for an extra pop of matcha flavor and a classic finish.
  • Strawberry: Adds a fresh, sweet, and slightly tart contrast to the rich and creamy dessert.

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Add boiling water to matcha powder and whisk until a light foam forms on the surface. This will be the matcha tea used to add to the cookies.

To make the vegan cream layer:

  • Scoop out the solidified cream from the top of your oat whipping cream that has been refridgerated overnight.
  • Combine oat cream with powdered sugar and matcha and whip with an electric hand mixer until stiff peaks form.
  • To assemble:

Briefly submerge Biscoff cookies in prepared matcha tea.

Arrange matcha-infused cookies at the bottom of your chosen container. Layer whipped matcha oat cream over the cookies. Alternate layers until all components are used, finishing with a cream layer on top.

Refrigerate the tiramisu to set (a few hours or overnight). Just before serving, dust the top with matcha powder and garnish with fresh strawberries.

Substitutions

You can use either full-fat coconut milk or coconut cream instead of the oat whipping cream. They will get fluffy and airy due to high fat content. Just remember to refrigerate the can overnight beforehand and only scoop out the cream.

Equipment

  • Blender: For a smooth tofu mixture.
  • Matcha sifter: To evenly distribute matcha powder.
  • Baking tray or Glass container: Ideal for creating those classic tiramisu layers.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. It’s not freezer-friendly as it may affect the texture.

Top tip

  • Ensure your matcha tea is cooled before dipping and briefly dipping the cookies in the matcha to prevent soggy ladyfingers.
  • Chill the oat whipping cream for several hours or overnight prior to preparation.

FAQ

Can I sift matcha without a matcha sifter?

If you don’t have a matcha sifter, you can use a fine-mesh sieve or a small handheld strainer as an alternative. The goal is to break up any clumps and ensure a smooth consistency for your matcha powder.
